Pre-Season to Taste

Most of us lower division football fans can now relax and start thinking about next season. Start hoping. And planning. We’re mostly aware of which players are leaving our club and everyone is after a solid centre half and 20 goals-a-season forward we all think we need to be a decent side next year.

And, there’s the fun of the summer to look forward to; the good old underrated fun of the pre-season friendly. Perhaps a much bigger club will come to town Server 2008 Key, a team you wouldn’t normally face. The club shop will be open to launch the new kit and other such essential ephemera (perhaps the garden gnomes will be back in stock). The matches and the store’s footfall are a very important revenue stream for smaller clubs before the season begins, especially as most grounds are not ‘world class conference venues’ and football is the only event that gets the tills beeping. Plus, of course, the first team needs to introduce all the new players to new tactics Server 2008 Key, new colleagues and fitness needs to be tested in a proper match environment.

Not in London. Not this summer. The Olympics is the law. Literally: the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006 to be precise. This limits sporting events during the Olympics, mainly to make sure emergency services aren’t bothered with too many non-Olympic things. This falls in the pre-season period. So that’s the London clubs’ pre-season cash injection down the pan then. Plus, this period is going to rub very close to the first round of the League Cup: bummer if a London club is drawn at home.

So you’d think all the lower-league clubs are aware of this and have made plans? Nope. I emailed all of the London clubs outside the Premier League (except West Ham, long story) and was mainly met by “ooh, we don’t know”. Two clubs said “it doesn’t affect us” (oh, but it does) and I still await two replies. Two notable exceptions: One were going to have a testimonial for a player which they soon realised they can’t do, and extra Billy-points to the club I support, Brentford, for only being all over this but having already planned how to get around the cash-flow issue: the Chief Executive Mark Devlin tells me a ‘family fun day’ is being planned where the ground (and the shop) will be open, the players will be there to chat to the fans and there will be the usual family-day activities.

So as a result of Lord Olympics, Brentford are going on tour! Hooray! It’s very unusual that a football club such as ours will get to play abroad Windows XP Key, but we’re off to Germany (the former DDR in fact) for a 1970s-style training camp and three games against local sides. So rather than relaxing about pre-season and the usual trips to Staines Town and Lewes I’m actually rather excited to be enjoying a little bit of football exotica.

What about your club? What are they going to do? Start hoping. And planning.

The Note’s Must-Reads are a round-up of today’s political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News’ Jayce Henderson, Carrie Halperin, and Ben Waldron

PRESIDENT OBAMA:
ABC News’ Rick Klein: “Obama: ‘I Think Same-Sex Couple Should Be Able to Get Married” President Obama today announced that he now supports same-sex marriage, reversing his longstanding opposition amid growing pressure from the Democratic base and even his own vice president. LINK

ABC News’ Amy Walter: “Obama’s Support for Gay Marriage: Political Impact” So what does President Obama’s support for gay marriage mean for 2012? Via email replica watches, I surveyed a gaggle of smart pollsters- Democrat and Republican – and found the following: LINK

The New York Times’ Adam Nagourney: “A Watershed Move replica watches, Both Risky and Inevitable” President Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage on Wednesday was by any measure a watershed. A sitting United States president took sides in what many people consider the last civil rights movement, providing the most powerful evidence to date of how rapidly views are moving on an issue that was politically toxic just five years ago. LINK

The Washington Time’s Dave Boyer: “Obama’s week: Bad to worse” Since kicking off his re-election campaign last weekend, President Obama has endured a rapid series of stumbles, including a debate on gay marriage initiated by his vice president and an embarrassingly close primary victory over a prison inmate. LINK

The Los Angeles Times’ Joseph Tanfani, Matea Gold and Melanie Mason: “Gay donors thrilled by Obama gay marriage stance” President Obama’s decision to embrace gay marriage may add a political complication to his reelection bid, but it is also unleashing a wave of new financial support from gay and lesbian donors who were already major backers of his candidacy. LINK

The Boston Globe’s Noah Bierman: “Brown, Warren react to Obama’s support of gay marriage” US Senator Scott Brown, an opponent of gay marriage when he was in the Massachusetts Legislature, said in a statement today that gay marriage is “settled law” in Massachusetts and should be decided by the states instead of the federal government. LINK

Politico’s Glen Thrush and Jennifer Epstein: “W.H.: Joe Biden forced Obama’s hand on gay marriage” For President Barack Obama and his team, the decision to back gay marriage came down to a choice between two unpalatable alternatives: Support it and brave the backlash in battleground states where the issue could be a liability — or keep silent and be accused by allies of gutlessness and putting politics over principle. LINK

Wall Street Journal’s Laura Meckler and Geoffrey Fowler: “President Plants His Feet on Rapidly Shifting Terrain” Americans and their institutions have rapidly transformed their views on gay marriage in recent years. But some 40% of the country remains opposed, and voters in state after state have banned such unions. LINK

MITT ROMNEY:
The Washington Post’s Felicia Sonmez: “As Obama backs gay marriage, Romney maintains opposition replica watches, calls it a ‘tender’ issue” Down the road from the Oklahoma State Capitol, where a towering oil derrick on the grounds is a tangible reminder of the industry’s clout in the state, Mitt Romney took the podium at the state GOP headquarters Wednesday afternoon intent on hammering President Obama on his handling of the economy and domestic energy production. LINK

Bloomberg’s John McCormick: “Romney Says Obama Takes Undue Credit for Oil-Output Gains“ Mitt Romney, campaigning amid oil rigs dotting the landscape in Colorado, said President Barack Obama’s policies have hurt U.S. energy output and that regulation of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas should be left to states.  ”The president tries to take credit for the fact that oil production is up,” the former Massachusetts governor and presumptive Republican presidential nominee told supporters against the backdrop of an oil rig outside Fort Lupton. LINK

RON PAUL:
USA Today’s Catalina Camia: “Ron Paul adds delegates so he can change GOP agenda” Ron Paul says he’s still on the hunt for GOP convention delegates to advance his political agenda of smaller government. LINK

Job Search in the Digital Age

The job market has gotten remarkably complicated lately, and it’s not just recession, off-shoring, outsourcing and globalization. These are part of it, obviously, but it’s more than that.

The internet has fundamentally changed the way employers hunt for talent, and the more companies depend on resume boards, search engines, and social networks, the more these tools become a necessary part of a job search strategy.

As it turns out, however, the online world is just part of the equation. When it comes time to craft a job search strategy, it’s useful to look at the numbers and see what’s actually producing results. Not surprisingly, the numbers still show referrals as the number one source of hiring – and by a fairly significant margin. According to the 11th annual “Sources of Hire Survey” by CareerXroads, referrals took the top spot for the 11th consecutive year at 28%. The online job boards collectively came in second at just over 20%, followed by company career sites, recruiters, and a hodge-podge of college recruiting, print media, rehires, temp conversion and “other.”

Turns out that even in the digital age, real world recommendations carry more weight than anything that happens online. Hiring is still about people, and as a job seeker you’d have to be nuts to ignore the methods and goals of those in charge of choosing their resources. It just wouldn’t make sense. But what do those numbers mean, in practical terms Tattoo Gun Equipment, to you as a job seeker? The short version is that they should help dictate where to invest your time and energy.

Personally, my top three recommendations are:
1) Focus on real world relationships
2) Build a magnetic online presence (become a Purple Squirrel), and
3) Use online information to take intelligent offline action.

As the survey shows, referrals are the highest probability path to your next job offer, and that points back to real world relationships. A great place to start is with the people who already know you best — friends, family, past coworkers, bosses, clients, and so on. Let them know you’re in a job search, ask for their help and guidance, and be thankful for whatever assistance they can give. That’s option one. Beyond your immediate sphere of influence are professional networking groups, industry associations, alumni gatherings, and training or education programs, all of which offer outstanding ways to connect with potential influencers. These are usually a slower path to employment, but should be a part of your long term career strategy no matter what. Find relevant groups Tattoo Kits Wholesale, contribute, and next time around you may get recruited rather than having to search for work. That’s a whole lot better.

Once you’re in an actual job search, the internet can be an extraordinary ally. Online job boards, search engines Tattoo Gun Needles, and social networks create endless opportunities to connect with relevant and motivated employers. Standing out in cyberspace depends on figuring out how to differentiate yourself from the millions of others attempting to do the same thing, and understanding of how the other side searches for employees can help illuminate what it really takes to make that happen.

To effectively search online and database resources, talent hunters construct queries comprised of various role-specific parameters. These evaluate each resume in the system against criteria that includes a combination of key words, phrases, titles, past employers, locations, industries, dates, degrees, certifications, and so on. The results are then presented for review in an order determined by some proprietary ranking system or sorting algorithm.

In order to build a resume that shows up towards the top of the list, your resume has to hit the high points of that particular query — but how to figure out what those will be? Reading job descriptions and analyzing the words, phrases, and requirements most commonly used by employers in your space is the simplest and easiest place to start. The more you can honestly and accurately build the language of your audience into your own resume, the more page views and interview requests you’re likely to land – and this is a good thing.

Our last category is using online information to take intelligent offline action. The internet can be a great ally, but it can also be an enormous time-drain. Applying directly to internet job postings is a great example. The numbers vary from industry to industry and company to company, but it’s not that uncommon for a given listing to receive 50 or more applications. Factor in the possibility of employee referrals, promotions, and internal transfers, and you start to get a sense of how likely it really is for that path to produce a job offer. Not stellar.

Does that mean you should give up on online search or stop applying altogether? Absolutely not. Even though submitting a resume directly to a given posting isn’t a high probability exercise, the information on the listing is a good starting point for taking a more targeted and strategic approach to making contact. When you find an interesting job opening, a search on LinkedIn or request to your social networks can quickly turn up personal connections to the company. If you have one, ask that person to put your resume forward for you. The odds of a productive outcome go up dramatically if you get introduced or recommended rather than blindly submitting online.

If you don’t have a direct connection, you can use a similar set of resources to identify recruiters and HR professionals in the company. From there it’s relatively easy to reach out online or call the main company phone number and ask for a specific person by name. Not everyone you reach will be receptive to helping, but lots will, and that can help take you move you from being viewed as an “online applicant” to an “employee introduced applicant.” This may seem like a minor thing, but it’s not.

As the numbers show, having a real live human being involved can make all the difference in the world.

U.S. hostage urges Obama to meet al Qaeda demands

DUBAI (Reuters) – An American aid worker abducted by al Qaeda in Pakistan last year has pleaded with U.S. President Barack Obama to meet his captors’ demands for the release of prisoners in order to save his life, in a video released by the militant group’s media arm.

In the short clip posted on Islamist Internet forums, Warren Weinstein, who was kidnapped in the central Pakistani city of Lahore last August, appealed to Obama to “accept and respond to the mujahideen (holy warriors)”.

“My life is in your hands Cheap Bandage dresses, Mr. President. If you accept the demands, I live; if you don’t accept the demands Cheap Missoni Dresses, then I die,” said Weinstein, seated behind a table with a small stack of books and what appeared to be plates of food on it.

He said he wanted his wife to know he was “well” and had been provided with all the medicines he needed.

Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri said in an audio recording in December that the group was responsible for Weinstein’s abduction and demanded the release of all those in U.S. detention for ties to his Islamist militant group or the Taliban.

He also demanded an end to air strikes by the United States and its allies against militants in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia and Gaza.

White House spokesman Jay Carney called on Monday for Weinstein’s immediate release and told a news briefing in Washington: “We cannot and will not negotiate with al Qaeda.”

Stir It Up

As not everybody now remembers DKNY Clothing sale, the wars of Yugoslavia actually began not in Bosnia, nor in Croatia, but in Kosovo. The chain of events that led to the Srebrenica massacre and the bombing of Belgrade started there in the late 1980s, when late Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic launched a series of repressive measures against this mostly Albanian, semi-independent, “autonomous province” of Serbia. These culminated in 1989, when Milosevic ended the semi-independence, revoked Kosovo’s autonomy, installed a new police force, shut down Albanian newspapers, fired university professors Cheap Bandage dresses, and generally inflicted economic and political chaos.

Milosevic’s intention was to reassert Serbian and Orthodox dominance over Kosovo, the site of a historically significant battle between the Serbs and the Ottoman Empire in 1389 (the Serbs lost) and home to a genuinely substantial Serbian minority. The result? This week, nearly two decades later, Kosovo—an Albanian-speaking Muslim state in which, it’s safe to guess, Serbs will be less than fully welcome and no Orthodox church will be safe from vandalism—has just declared independence from Serbia. A more eloquent demonstration of the law of unintended consequences would be hard to find.

In fact, watching the crowds celebrate last Saturday night in the streets of Pristina, I wondered whether there isn’t a deeper lesson here for other would-be neighborhood bullies. Milosevic’s stated goal was, after all, the greater glory of Serbia (he had other Cheap Hale Bob Dresses, unstated goals as well, such as the perpetuation of a Communist-era power structure, but never mind). Spouting Serbian nationalism, he helped turn Serb minorities across Yugoslavia into mini-militias. They, in turn, inspired the creation of other mini-militias—Croatian, Bosnian, Albanian, and others—that began fighting one another in a series of small, nasty wars.

You can fairly accuse me here of oversimplifying this chronology, but I think it is nevertheless correct to say that the end result of this activity—discrimination, ethnic cleansing, warfare—was a complete disaster for Serbia. The Serbian economy went down the tubes; the Serb dominance of ex-Yugoslavia evaporated; Belgrade, the Serb capital, was bombed. Now Serbia looks set to be dismembered as well: Unenthusiastically, Europe and the United States will recognize Kosovo’s independence, something that wouldn’t have happened two decades ago. Milosevic the supernationalist—the would-be leader of a revived, powerful, successful Serbia—damaged no country nearly so much as he damaged Serbia itself.

Keep that lesson in mind over the next few months as others in Europe—and possibly elsewhere—attempt to use the Kosovo example as a precedent. After all, if the Albanians can be independent from Serbia, then the Abkhazians and South Ossettians would like to be independent from Georgia, the Basques and the Catalonians don’t see why they shouldn’t be independent from Spain, and who knows what could happen in Cyprus.

In some of these cases, there are other, larger neighbors who might be interested in facilitating the split, just as Serbia was keen to encourage ethnic Serbs in Bosnia or Croatia. Most notably, and most notoriously, the Russians have made ominous noises and dropped dark hints about those Georgian separatist groups, and one can certainly see their logic. What more perfect way to take revenge on those difficult, NATO-loving Georgians than to encourage Georgia’s ethnic minorities to launch civil war? Besides, the timing could hardly be better. In the waning days of the Bush administration, is Abkhazia anybody’s central concern? During the most interesting U.S. presidential campaign in decades, is anyone going to spare a thought for South Ossetia?

Except that if Abkhazia and South Ossetia were to secede, and civil war in Georgia were to follow, the Russians would then have a failed state on their borders. And—as we know from Yugoslavia, from the Middle East, and from Africa—ethnic and religious civil wars have a nasty way of spreading to their neighbors. Chaos in Georgia might be in the short-term interests of a small group of Putinites DKNY Clothes sale, desperate to raise the specter of warfare Missoni Dresses sale, annoy the West, and cling to power (much like Milosevic, once upon a time) Discount Herve Leger gown, but it is most definitely not in the long-term interests of the Russian nation.

Russia’s policy toward these would-be separatists over the next few weeks will therefore reveal a great deal about the mentality of Russia’s current ruling clan. If the denizens of the Kremlin have a shred of concern about their compatriots’ future well-being, they’ll shut up and try to calm everyone down. If not—well, I hope they remember that the risks of the law of unintended consequences apply to them, too.

Diddy Could Save Sampling

Sean “Diddy” Combs

Sean “Diddy” Combs is one of the most successful (and richest) men in the music business. He has many to thank for this success. When he launched Bad Boy Records, the Notorious B.I.G. was one of the first artists on the label, and it was B.I.G.’s 1994 debut album, Ready To Die, that brought Combs his first platinum hit. The album was lauded for B.I.G.’s vocals—and for its underlying layers of sound Herve leger strapless sale, many of them built on “samples,” or short snippets, from previously recorded songs.

By the time B.I.G. recorded Ready To Die Cheap Bandage dresses, sampling had come to define hip-hop. The music of artists like Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys was built upon the inspired combination of samples, some recognizable Chanel Dresses sale, many not, to create brand-new sounds. Sampling originated among the DJs of New York City, who began looping and extending drum breaks while adding rap vocals, scratching, and other improvisations—all, of course Buy Chloe Dresses, without permission from anyone. With Combs as his producer, B.I.G. followed in this tradition and wove sample upon sample into the tracks he recorded.

But if sampling has been a critical component of hip-hop music for three decades, its legality remains surprisingly unclear—and artists and producers like Combs share the blame for that. Their failure to defend sampling when it has been challenged in court has contributed significantly to the legal uncertainty that surrounds the technique, and now extends to the title track from Ready To Die.

Sound recordings are subject to copyright protections. That means the copyright owner holds the exclusive right to reproduce the recordings. Because sampling involves reproduction Herve Leger sale, every sample presents a potential copyright violation Chloe Dresses sale, unless the sampling is authorized by the copyright holder.

Copyright law, however, creates these exclusive rights to serve a larger goal—to provide incentives that spur the creation of new artistic works. When one artist uses the copyrighted work of another to help create something new, these goals collide. This tension is supposed to be resolved in large part by copyright’s fair-use doctrine, which protects the right to use copyrighted content in new and transformative ways, so long as you use small amounts and do not cause too much harm to the market for the original work. It is fair use that protects the right to make musical parodies (as 2 Live Crew demonstrated with its parody of Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman”) or to incorporate a photograph into a visual art collage in a way that expresses new meaning (as Jeff Koons demonstrated recently with his work Niagara).

Viewed through the lens of fair use, music sampling should fare well. It tends to be transformative, uses short (often unrecognizable) snippets of the original work, and creates little possibility that the new work will plausibly substitute for the old. At the very least, the fair-use doctrine should play a central role in determining the legality of sampling.

But in practice, the fair-use defense is almost nowhere to be found in music-sampling cases; it’s not even discussed. That may be partly because sampling got off to a rocky legal start. The first ruling to pass judgment on sampling came down in 1991 and involved Biz Markie’s rendition of “Alone Again,” which borrowed the entire melody from Gilbert O’Sullivan’s original song of the same name. Markie took 20 seconds of the melody, looped it, and added his own vocal track on top. His new song felt uninspired and sounded like simple theft, and that’s what the court called it. The judge hearing the case did not consider fair use or any other possible defense to the allegations that Markie infringed O’Sullivan’s copyrights. On the contrary, the court treated the copyright violation as a foregone conclusion and referred Markie to the U.S. attorneys’ office for criminal prosecution. So, while the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, and many others were using samples as the raw material to weave the new fabric of hip-hop, it was the comparatively uninspired “theft” of Biz Markie that drew sampling’s first legal ruling.
